The nature of work of any job covers tasks that you will be doing on a day-to-day basis. Analyze if you will be happy doing these activities day in and day out with periodic variations. The information should help you understand the career better.

Once you know the day to day functions involved in a job, you need to identify the skills and abilities that are required for you to succeed in that particular role. Differentiate between technical skills (like computer knowledge or knowledge of accounting) that can be acquired by taking up courses and soft skills (like interpersonal skills or ability to lead a group) that have to be consciously developed.



It is very important for you to know what different job options are available to you depending on your qualifications.  For example ask yourself these questions: If I choose to take up a particular course and add this qualification to my credit where can I see myself? What are my options? Individuals who have taken the same course and the work they are involved in should help you determine what your options are.


Information on what you can branch out into with the same qualification would help in looking at career diversification. A lawyer, for example, can join an organization in the human resources division or can teach in a college if he or she prefers not to get into the mainstream of legal work.


Vocational database: It is important for you to have information on different vocations so that you can shortlist the ones that suit your career preferences. Gather information on the careers. Don’t rely only on the media or hearsay. Gather information from a variety of sources. Compare them. Read books on various careers. Look up career websites. Based on the information gathered you will be able to get a fair idea of the various careers available. Examine at the rewards and hardships involved in any career. Create your own vocational database and make decisions based on the information compiled.

Study options:  Now that you have decided on a career option, you have to start considering the different study options to gain an entry into the career of your choice. There are different paths to a destination. Let us take the example of law:

  • CLASS XII-science/commerce/arts Graduation in any subject LLB (3 YEAR COURSE)
  • CLASS XII-science/commerce/arts A. LLB (5 YEAR COURSE).

Get as much information about the various options and then choose the one which suits you best. Every course/subject typically has the following options.

  • Degree courses
  • Diploma courses
  • Correspondence/distance education courses

Once you have determined the course, the next step is to identify colleges that offer these courses. The factor to be considered include reputation of colleges, admission procedures, eligibility criteria, and fees.
